Características Aceite de Navarra

Characteristics

The extra virgin olive oil covered by the Navarra Olive Oil PDO is obtained from olives harvested straight from the tree belonging to the following varieties: Arróniz, Empeltre and Arbequina.

The Arróniz variety is a native variety and in order to bear the Navarra Olive Oil PDO back label, the oil must contain more than 10% of this variety in the blend, which can come from mixing oils or olives.

From an organoleptic point of view, the oil has a unique, characteristic profile, conforming to the following parameters:

Production

In the production process, it is very important that the oil is extracted from the olives before they deteriorate too much in order to maintain their composition and organoleptic characteristics, and thus obtain a juice of the highest quality: EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL.

History

The Navarra Olive Oil Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) has been working since 2007 to guarantee the highest quality and traceability of the olive oil which bears its label, which only covers extra virgin olive oil (EVOO).

The bottles always bear the Designation logo, a numbered back label and the European logo to show its inclusion in the EU register.

The olive tree is a Mediterranean crop plant which has held a place in the history and landscape of Navarra for two thousand years. First the Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans, and later the Arabs, spread and perfected the techniques of olive cultivation and oil extraction. Archaeology has found evidence of the existence of oil mills or trujales in the Roman villas of Liédena, Cascante, Barillas, Ablitas and ‘Las Musas’ of Arellano.

Over the centuries, the extent and importance of our olive groves have suffered ups and downs. After a period of decline, coinciding with the fall of the Roman Empire, oil production resumed in the region in the Middle Ages with the appearance of the first irrigation systems. Then it went through further stages in which it was forgotten until the first third of the twentieth century when Navarra’s olive groves lived a new age of splendour and some of their oils won awards and recognitions, as happened to an oil from Cascante at the 1929 Universal Exhibition in Seville.

The olive grove has always been part of our landscape as a hardy crop, adapted to our arid lands, the fruit of which, cared for with artisanal dedication, was intended for local consumption. Olive oil has always been present in our culture and our family diet.

The international recognition and prestige of the Mediterranean Diet, as a source of health, has driven the demand for EVOO within and beyond our borders. As a result, the olive sector has grown and is experiencing spectacular expansion. The groves have multiplied, the trujales have been modernised and olive growing has become an attractive sector for investment. Indeed, the consumption of olive oil continues to increase and it is still far from reaching its peak. Buy juice of the highest quality: OLIVE OIL
